What is an FDM3D printer?

It is the most common of today’s 3D printing machines. FDM 3D printers use nozzles to melt threadlike materials, which are then deposited in thousands upon thousands of extremely thin layers. The smallest FDM 3D printers are special pens that extrude heated plastic from the pen’s nozzle, allowing you to “draw” 3D objects in the air. The largest are the professional machines used by experts. Many are plug-and play desktop computers that are safe and simple to use for all ages, even children.

What is FDM?

The letters denote fused-deposition modeling. It creates a physical object by using digital files. The digital instructions are followed by the FDM printer, which squeezes plastic filaments through nozzles similar to toothpaste through tubes. However, each layer is much thinner and less precise. FDM can also be called FFF for fused filament fabrication.

What is 3D printing?

To create a 3D printer, layers of ultrathin material are added to each layer. Each layer is fused by heat. Like the number of pixels in a screen’s display, more layers are needed to print the final product.

What materials can be used for 3D printing?

There are many materials that can be used in 3D printing. Most of the filaments are made from resins. These are thin, elongated threads which are wound on spools and sold by the pound. FDM 3D printers use filaments.

Commonly used filaments

  • PLA: Polylactic acid is environmentally friendly because it’s made from renewable organic resources such as sugar cane and cornstarch. PLA is great for 3D printing because it’s cheap, easy to work with, available in many colors and can be used either as a filament or a resin.
  • PVA: Polyvinyl Alcohol is nontoxic, colorless, and odorless. It dissolves in water just like the plastic pods that many liquid laundry detergents come in and so is used mainly as supporting structures for 3D prints made with PLA.
  • ABS: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene is a favorite of people just starting out in 3D printing because it’s strong, flexible and affordable. It requires high printing temperatures, is not biodegradable and often gives off irritating fumes.
  • PET: The high strength and resistance to moisture of polyethylene terephthalate are reasons why it is so popular. It is also possible to add glycol to make PETG. This plastic is both more durable and easier for you to handle.
  • TPU: Thermoplastic polyurethane (or thermoplastic polyurethane) is a flexible, rubber-like filament that resists abrasions and impact. It is also impervious to greases, oils, and solvents.
  • Nylon: This material is ideal for products that are subject to a lot of wear and tear. This material absorbs water well, making it easier for you to use dyes and other coloring agents. However, it is difficult to work with unless your are a skilled 3D-printer.

How to choose a filament

Filaments can come in a wide variety of materials, each with its own characteristics and properties. Your project will be more successful if you can match the material to your desired product.

What physical properties would I like my final product to possess?

PLA is environmentally friendly and biodegradable, but ABS is stronger and resists heat better. PETG is more resistant to impact, ASA is extremely resistant to UV rays damage and PVA dissolves easily in water. Your 3D building materials should match yours.

Is it compatible with my 3D Printer?

Check to see what your printer’s requirements and limitations are. Some filaments are more sensitive to high temperatures than basic FDM 3D printers.
